respect for marriage

The US Senate has passed the Respect for Marriage Act: “No person may deny full faith and credit to any public act, record, or judicial proceeding of any other State pertaining to a marriage between 2 individuals, on the basis of sex, gender, race, ethnicity, or national origin.”

This bill (
S. 4556) repeals the 1996 Defense of Marriage law which stated, “No State shall be required to recognize a relationship between persons of the same sex as a marriage.”

The 2022 Respect for Marriage Act rejects the teachings of Jesus. And it discards the biological reality upon which the sociology of marriage developed around the world.

Jesus asked 1st century cultural leaders: “Haven’t you read that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Jesus warned that the divine design—i.e., one male and one female—must not be dissolved. Yet the US Senate, parroting the Supreme Court, did just that.

Biologically it requires a female and a male to create human life. Sociologically a mother and father committed to each other and to their child afford the best environment for human development. Cultures throughout history recognized this divine design. That is why heterosexual marriage has been honored as sacred by cultures around the world.

Today’s
redefining of marriage results from contemporary whims. Let us be thankful the Respect for Marriage Act limits marriage to two individuals. But, how long might that limit last? Polyamorous relationships are increasingly common.

Followers of Christ are called to respond to persons, not ideologies. Many gay couples sincerely desire children. Problem is, they aspire to that which runs counter to their sexual acts.

It is destructive to cast aside the teachings of Jesus. Any culture that takes pride in what is contrary to the natural acts that give and sustain life becomes self-destructive. It denies God’s created order and rejects Jesus as Lord.
